Women of the World Poetry Slam Comes to New York City

The Big Apple Hosts International Women-Only Slam for the First Time

NEW YORK—Local organizers of the Women of the World Poetry Slam are proud to announce New York as the host city for the 2016 competition. The four-day poetry festival will take place March 9-12, 2016 on the Pratt Institute campus in Brooklyn. All events will be open to the public.

The Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWps) brings together 96 of the best women and gender-non-conforming slam poets to compete against one another for a chance to be crowned champion. In addition to the competition, each day of the festival features poetry workshops, themed open mics and special events designed to foster community-building among participants.

WOWps is produced by the non-profit organization Poetry Slam Incorporated (PSI), which oversees the international coalition of poetry slams. In addition to Women of the World, PSI also manages several large-scale competitions, including the National Poetry Slam and the Individual World Poetry Slam. Renowned poet and author Mahogany L. Browne is the designated PSI representative serving as the event coordinator for the 2016 festival. Browne is an alumna of both Cave Canem and Poets House, the publisher of Penmanship Books—a small press for performance artists—and the Poetry Program Director at the Nuyorican Poets Café. To plan the event, Browne is joined by an incredible host committee, which includes nationally-ranked poets April Ranger, Cecily Schuler, MaryCae, and Lauren Ash Williams.

With New York as the backdrop of the 2016 Women of the World Poetry Slam, the festival promises to be an unforgettable event. All information and festival tickets are available at wowps2016.com  To sponsor or support the festival, please email April Ranger at aprilwowps@gmail.com.
