Caravan Sessions

Caravan Sessions is a concert series designed to empower artists, inspire audiences, and build communities. Based in NYC, each monthly concert is backed by a strong social network where artists can premier new work, collaborate and hone their crafts. This month we'll kick off the first performance at our new residency at the Commons Cafe in Brooklyn with founder and curator Adam Bonomo (7:30pm) and South African Jazz vocalist Vuyo Sotashe (9:30pm).

Bonomo is a New York-based band on a mission to unify musical traditions and audiences alike. Bonomo’s music wakes us up, develops our conscience, and ignites our curiosity. Fusing influences from gospel, folk, jazz, and classical music, Bonomo has won spots in the top 5 at the Indie International songwriting competition, the top 3 at the New Song music competition, third place in the Nashville Film Festival, and first place in the CASC song-writing competition. Their first album, Phases, was released on February 19, 2017, live at Joe’s Pub in Manhattan. Their next project, a series of four singles, will be released in early 2018.

Young South African jazz vocalist, Vuyo (Vuyolwethu) Sotashe, is gradually making his mark in the New York jazz scene. He is currently performing around New York City with drummer Winard Harper, who has performed with the likes of Betty Carter and Shirley Horn. Sotashe moved to NYC in 2013 after being awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to pursue a Master of Music at William Paterson University. Since then, he has gone on to win first prize at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival Vocal Competition in 2014. Sotashe performed at the Arcevia Jazz Fest and the Fermo Jazz Festival in Italy 2012; the Stockholm Jazz Festival with South African National Youth Jazz Band in Sweden 2012; at the Cape Town International Festival with George Benson and the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra 2010; the Johannesburg Joy of Jazz Festival 2012; and he has toured with the SAMA Award (GRAMMY equivalent) winning band Proxy in the UK and Ireland 2009-2011. He has performed with Grammy-Award winning gospel artist, Israel Houghton as part of New Breed (Africa) Ensemble. Sotashe is the winner of the biggest music scholarship competition in South Africa, the Music Rights Foundation Scholarship.
